I do Lady(like) things!

Tonight is the night! Ladylike, an exploration of the dark side of female relationships, opens at the Sattelite Gallery in Asheville. This show is an 11 woman show curated by local artist Alli Good. (One Of my personal faves). There will be paintings, performance, installation, film(i believe) and sculpture. I am fucking stoked.

I stormed Alli's opening at the Sattelite just over 2 years ago and became an instant fan. Now I'm trying to become a collector. Art this amazing (while worth every penny) doesn't come cheap! We've gotten to know each other a little here and there by traveling in similar circles and vending our (very different) wares at the same shows. Although I am always trying to build relationships with strong, conscientious, artful women, I find these bonds to be extremely tenuous. Especially when I admire someone's work as much as I do Alli's.

I'm working on a piece inspired by the show's theme. I'll bring some photos to the table soon. My visual art is something I have a difficult time showing. But I am trying...

In other news:

1. I got a 1984 yamaha scooter. I love it! It's mid 80s stylings make me feel like I'm tooling around on a giant pair of pearl white RayBans.

2. We rescued a pup. Our big monster neede a puppy to love, (and my girl needed a little pup she could interact with more...she's injured and Ed is a TON of dog.) So we went to the pound to look at the pups and see if one would fit our home. Like the dipshit I am, I walked into the wrong building. Inside was an older toothless hillbilly surrendering the keyoooooootest little black pup. We took him home balls and all. We figured it was a win/win. It's one less pup draining the resources of the county shelter. He was free to adopt! And he fits in very well. Ed's kinda being an ass, but that is sort of to be expected. After all, he's about spoiled.

3. We have a buncha shows coming up for the holiday season. I'll be hearing back about a few of them shortly, so I'll post the holiday tour schedule as soon as confirmation arrives. Until the I'm a maniac behind the machine. Ties, hats, clothing, pendants, earrings, cuffs, belts, wallets, handbags, messenger bags, repeat!

We'll talk to you soon(and bring photos!) Blogland.

It got did! (punctually, for once)

This morning, I had a hot little number of an email in my inbox from The Big Crafty.  Seeing that it is one of my 2 favorite shows in the region (LAAFF being the other one - Mark the date - this Sunday, Sept 5!!!!!), I have been eyeing their website with anticipation waiting for the apps to go live.  Today, they did, and what did I do?  In the spirit of turning over a new leaf (thank you, Tara Gentile and Megan Auman), I actually applied early.  I want to be in this show again Big Time.  The summer show was amazing!  My shared booth with 75rabbit was packed all day, folks were smiling through the rain, the sun was out MOST of the day, and I had a smashing time.

I was honored to be set up among so many talented, imaginitive artists and crafters, many of whom I admire and aspire to build connections with.  I hope to become a staple at The Big Crafty, so I can continue to offer Asheville the best of what my hardworking hands have to give.

In other news, I'm preparing for the Holiday Season (can you say 16 hour day minimums?), reading everything Tara and Megan write (and trying to put it to use, attending seminars (and the occasional rock show), finding myself increasingly inspired by the cooler weather (and the textures/colors that come out to play during it), balking at the idea of Winter (it's only September, but Winter and I are life-long enemies), and sewing, tweeting, eating deliciousness in veggie form, and drinking a small country's worth of coffee.

Here's to inspiration lurking in the shadows, scents, and crispness of the coming days.

Mmmmhhhmmm...

We're slackers...or so we tell ourselves even while we're work work working ourselves silly. Anyways, we just finished the application to Craftin' Outlaws in Columbus, OH. The apps are due July 25, but we've been hemming and hawing around about a return trip to OH. Our hearts say yes, but our brains say get our hustle on nearby. OUR HEARTS WON ONE!!! Hopefully the jury likes our stuff enough to allow us to join the posse.

Here's a link to the flickr folder we set up in their honor.  Have a lookypiepie and let us know what you think.  Our photographs are ever evolving, and we haven't quite found a comfortable spot so far as they're concerned...Any advice is welcome.

In other show news, we're applying today for several northern shows...(may as well, right?!) Crafts N'at in Phillie, Crafty Supermarket in Cinci, OH, Second Storie in Rochester, and and and.  Shit.  There was totally another one.  And of course I didn't bookmark it.

How in the world do people keep up with all these shows, and the dates the apps are due, and the dates the shows are in general?  I mean, I have a calendar I use faithfully on my droid, but damn!  I'm having a difficult time keeping things straight and still making enough inventory to get through.

Anyone want to intern?  We're broke but kind (and amazing cooks).  Anyone?  Anyone?

anyone?

All Gussied Up...

Wow.  This whole starting a blog thing takes a ton of time!  It is 4:11 in the morning and I have been futzing around for hours: checking out gadgets, badges, links, labels, and other fun ridiculousness.  Now I'm mildly happy and my my brains are worn out.  Yay! (in fact, this is the part where I crawl into my night-cooled bed and passed out for a few hours)

So, hi.  I'm C. Smash, she's AK47, and together we live in the house of devochka.  Our little businesses make our house fun, effervescent, insane, insomnial (yeah, insomnial...I was going to rock some insomaniacal, but I wasn't sure I could get away with it in written form), spontaneous, inspirational, and sometimes downright exhausting.  They include devochka (jewelry and accessories), Twisted Chromosome (clothing for every sex), A. Kender Fine Art, and Smashy Smashy (who's focus is yet to be determined).  You'll probably be hearing the most from devochka as she's the early bloomer.

We're taking the wild ride toward sustaining ourselves inside and out with our creativity.  It's freaking scary!  You're cordially invited to come along.  We'll be honest about our struggles, our successes, our (hopefully few) failures; this we promise.   This blog will be an in depth look into our world of striving to meet deadlines, build a reputation, pay our bills, and forge our own paths through this mad mad world.

Today, we'll toss out a couple photos of our work - the photos at hand are our new line of salvaged leather and scrap fabric pendants - and then slide off to productivity, because no matter how much we procrastinate, the reality is if we're not making it, we can't sell it. It's all a matter of getting our asses in the studio and working it out.

We hope you've enjoyed this little preview of what's coming out of our House. Links to these items in our shop will be active as soon as we get ourselves out of vacation mode.

It's exhausting...

Trying to make a blog pretty. That said, we'll return for introductions tomorrow. Sleep well, our lovelies.
